The Day When God Made Church
/I remember learning about Pentecost in my early twenties and wondering how I had missed this part of our sacred story. I knew nothing about the biblical origins of Pentecost (Acts 2) and that we remember God's gift of the Holy Spirit on this day. Now I delight in annually revisiting the tongues of flames and how the Holy Spirit spread and moved among and within the people, disrupting their lives.
This year Pentecost Sunday falls on May 28. As a part observing this Feast Day and season, I am re-reading a favorite Pentecost picture book, "The Day When God Made Church," by Rebekah McLeod Hutto and Stephanie Haig. The words and illustrations in this book invite us (both child and adult) into the Act's story while encouraging us to wonder how the Holy Spirit shaped and continues to shape, the Church.
Pentecost is not just an ancient story. It is about the ongoing life of the followers of Jesus, including us here and now.
